The Sindh government has decided to reopen the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) U-turn on University Road in Karachi. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.
According to Minute Mirror, the move is meant to give relief to motorists who face difficulties because of ongoing construction and to improve traffic flow. Memon said reopening the U-turn would give citizens additional travel convenience and ease their commuting problems.
The meeting reviewed arrangements for running the double-decker and electric buses that have recently arrived in Karachi. Officials briefed participants on plans to introduce the new buses on suitable routes across the city.
Memon directed the authorities to finalise suitable routes for these buses. Express News reported that he also asked for charging stations, depots, bus stops and other technical and administrative arrangements to be settled. He called for comprehensive planning for operations and services, saying that a larger bus fleet needs effective routes and operating systems.
He expressed hope that another batch of double-decker and electric buses would reach Karachi later this month. He directed that the buses be taken to the parts of the city where residents need public transport most.
On the Red Line project, Memon said extraordinary measures should be taken for its timely completion. He also directed that work on the second part of the Taj Haider Bridge be completed soon, and told officials to monitor construction daily so that work stays on schedule.
The meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, TransKarachi CEO Zubair Chinah, Yellow Line project director Kamal Dayo and other officials.
Why it matters
Karachi commuters who use University Road and depend on the Red Line BRT project are affected by the reopening of the U-turn and the planned new bus services.
