- NADRA official Fahad was shot dead outside the NADRA Region Office in Hayatabad, Peshawar, on Friday.
- Police are examining CCTV footage, including from the Peshawar Safe City project.
- Investigators are also looking into the possibility of personal enmity.
A senior official of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) was shot dead outside his office in Peshawar on Friday morning in what The Express Tribune described as an apparent targeted killing.
The shooting took place in front of the NADRA Region Office in the Hayatabad neighbourhood. According to the newspaper, deputy assistant director Fahad was walking towards the office building after parking his car across the street when unknown assailants on a motorcycle opened fire. Nawa-i-Waqt named him as Fahad Khan and reported that the shooting happened at the rear of the office.
Police said the NADRA official died on the spot and the attackers fled unchallenged. The incident was captured on CCTV footage that was widely circulated on social media.
Police and security forces cordoned off the site to collect evidence. Pickets were set up across the city and a search operation was launched.
Investigators are collecting CCTV footage from neighbouring buildings and are also examining recordings from the Peshawar Safe City project to identify the killers. Police reportedly found images of the assailants and shared them with NADRA for identification.
Investigators are also probing the possibility of personal enmity, the Express Tribune reported.
Officials said the dead official was a nephew of MNA Noor Alam Khan. They said he usually arrived at the office with guards in a bullet-proof car, but on Friday he came alone, driving his own vehicle.
NADRA was established during the Musharraf era to build a comprehensive database of Pakistan's citizens. In the past couple of years it has cancelled thousands of CNICs issued to foreign nationals, particularly Afghan refugees, as part of a government campaign.
Background
khabr.pk reported on 5 November that three children died in a gas cylinder blast that brought down a house roof near Pajagi Road in Peshawar.
Why it matters
NADRA offices issue CNICs and passports that millions of Pakistanis depend on, so attacks on its staff affect how these services are delivered. The killing took place at a regional office in Peshawar, where residents use its services. Police have not yet named the attackers or given a motive.
