Iran doubts US talks as Trump confirms strike near Strait of Hormuz

Iran has expressed deep doubt about talks with the United States, saying Washington's response to its proposals for reopening the Strait of Hormuz was inadequate. The comments came as President Donald Trump confirmed US strikes on an Iranian target early on Tuesday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran is willing to engage in diplomacy but has little confidence in Washington's intentions. He said the US attacked Iran twice during negotiations in less than a year, and accused it of failing to honour commitments reached under the Islamabad understanding.

Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, renewed demands that the US meet seven conditions before negotiations advance and the strait reopens. He said America's response "was not convincing, and they must fully and explicitly address Iran's seven conditions and act upon them". He added that the US has accepted some demands while other issues remain unresolved.

Iran has made lifting the US naval blockade and implementing its conditions prerequisites for restoring normal shipping. Baghaei said the proposal remains on the table, with the timetable shortened from seven days to a possible two days if the demands are met. The conditions include lifting sanctions and ending the blockade.

Trump told Fox News the strikes hit an anti-aircraft facility, describing it as a minor attack. He said: "They built an anti-aircraft facility. It took them about two months. We watched it get built. As soon as it was completed, we hit it last night." Iranian media said Qeshm Island was hit. US officials said the strikes were defensive and followed Iranian fire at an American aircraft.

Contacts continue through intermediaries including Qatar and Pakistan. Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said talks were continuing and both sides remain committed to the process. Qatar is facilitating real-time exchange of proposals.

The UKMTO reported two unidentified projectiles struck a tanker's engine room about 14 nautical miles northeast of Limah in Oman on Tuesday, with no casualties. The IRGC claimed four tankers struck mines and that it seized two vessels; these claims could not be independently verified. The strait has been severely disrupted since the war began in February.

US media, citing officials, reported Central Command has prepared plans for strikes that could start as early as Wednesday, after the midterm elections, with three carriers in the region. Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei ordered the military to respond to any threat immediately and without geographical limits. Hardline Iranian newspapers warned US and NATO bases in Europe could become targets if war resumed.

Why it matters

The standoff affects Gulf stability, oil and LPG prices and the jobs of Pakistani workers abroad. Pakistan is also named as one of the intermediaries in contacts between Iran and the US.
