Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has announced a new winter gas supply schedule for domestic consumers in Sindh and Balochistan. The company said the arrangement follows directives from the federal government and prioritises household cooking needs.

According to the schedule, gas will be available for breakfast from 6:30am to 9am, for lunch from 12pm to 2:30pm and for dinner from 6pm to 9pm. Daily Pakistan reported that this amounts to eight hours of supply in three separate intervals, leaving households without scheduled supply for the remaining 16 hours each day.

An SSGC spokesperson said on Wednesday that the schedule takes effect immediately. The company shared it on its website and social media platforms. SSGC said the aim is to manage gas load effectively this winter while keeping supply steady in line with government directives.

The announcement follows a severe gas shortage in Karachi on Tuesday. Daily Pakistan reported that households in several neighbourhoods of the city had their supply suspended or received insufficient pressure that day.

ProPakistani reported that several contradictory schedules attributed to SSGC circulated on social media from Monday, and that the company did not issue a clear, consolidated statement until late Tuesday evening.

Daily Pakistan linked the restrictions to disruptions in global energy supplies caused by the ongoing Iran war, and noted that Pakistan relies heavily on imported LNG to make up for declining domestic production.

The Express Tribune reported that the government announced reforms to the LPG sector a day earlier, including ending the quota-based distribution system in favour of competitive auctions. It also reported that domestic gas demand is expected to rise by 400 to 500 million cubic feet per day, and that alternative arrangements for imported LNG will be made.

Why it matters

Households in Sindh and Balochistan, including Karachi, will have gas for cooking only during set hours this winter. The schedule sets out when supply can be expected after days of confusion and shortages.
