Pakistan has reported its eighth polio case of 2026, detected in Khyber district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC).
According to the NEOC, six of the eight cases this year come from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and two from Sindh. The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the latest case involves a 13-month-old girl from Khyber district.
The Express Tribune reported that the child is from Jan Baz Union Council in Bara tehsil. It said this is the second case from Khyber district this year and the sixth from the province. That report counted the case as the seventh nationally, with one case from Sindh, while other outlets, citing the NEOC, put the national total at eight.
A special sub-national anti-polio campaign begins on Monday, November 2, in 97 selected districts and continues until November 8, 2026. The Express Tribune said the districts include all districts of Karachi.
About 24 million children under the age of five will be given polio drops during the campaign. The NEOC urged parents to make sure their children receive drops in every campaign and to complete routine immunisation on time.
The NEOC said Pakistan has reduced polio cases by 99.8 percent. The estimated number of cases fell from around 20,000 in the early 1990s to 31 in 2025, it said.
The Express Tribune reported that Pakistan has held four large-scale polio vaccination campaigns this year, targeting more than 45 million children. According to the NEOC, a sub-national campaign in September vaccinated more than 29.3 million children. The NEOC says polio is incurable but can be prevented through vaccination.
Why it matters
Polio affects children's health in Pakistan, and families in the 97 districts are being asked to get their children vaccinated in the campaign starting November 2.
