Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed has said the provincial police need between Rs30 billion and Rs40 billion to strengthen security and improve policing infrastructure in 12 districts. Some outlets reported the figure as Rs40 billion.
He said discussions are under way with the federal government to secure the required funds. According to Daily Times, the police have demanded Rs40 billion from Islamabad to improve the capability of the force, and the IG spoke on Sunday. Daily Jang said he made the remarks in talks with Geo News.
Four key areas have been identified for special attention in the 12 districts, according to Minute Mirror. The main focus is on providing modern weapons, drones and other essential equipment. Daily Times reported that the department will be given drones, anti-drone systems, modern bulletproof vehicles and armoured personnel carriers.
Safe City projects are also a priority. Authorities want to complete them in all 12 districts to strengthen surveillance, and the police aim to finish them within one year. Daily Times reported that work is moving quickly in Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Lakki Marwat, with the IG saying: "The work has been rapidly ongoing in Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Lakki Marwat."
The IG also spoke about the merged districts, which previously lacked proper police infrastructure. The government will set up necessary police facilities and strengthen the existing policing system there. Daily Times reported that police stations and posts are being built in five northern districts.
Areas with weak infrastructure will be upgraded, the shortage of police personnel will be addressed, and officers and personnel will receive specialised training.
Minute Mirror also reported that a summary on salary increases for KP police personnel has been prepared. The Finance Department will review the proposals and give recommendations before the summary goes to the governor.
Why it matters
Police funding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa affects public safety and government spending, including in the merged districts where police infrastructure was weak.
