ECP suspends Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local government elections until further orders
The Election Commission of Pakistan has suspended all steps for local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It acted after a federal order extended the suspension of Article 140-A of the Constitution.

- ECP halted all local government election steps in the remaining districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until further orders.
- The move follows Order No. 3 of 4 November 2026, which extends the suspension of Article 140-A.
- No new polling date or timeframe has been announced.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has suspended all steps taken so far for local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until further orders. According to Associated Press of Pakistan, the decision was announced on Thursday, 5 November.
The commission took the decision at a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. The meeting discussed Order No. 3, dated 4 November 2026, issued by the federal government the previous day, and reviewed its clause 2 in detail.
Business Recorder described the document as a governor's order, while Express News, APP and Daily Pakistan referred to it as a federal government order. All the reports agree that it suspends Article 140-A of the Constitution, and that the suspension is extended beyond the districts previously designated.
A briefing to the commission said Article 140-A concerns the establishment of local governments in the provinces. Elections had been planned in all districts except those where the article was already suspended after governor's rule and emergency.
According to Daily Pakistan, the commission said local government elections cannot proceed in any district of the province under the current constitutional framework. It also said it cannot fulfil its duty to hold free, fair and timely elections there because of the suspension.
The directive tells the authorities concerned to immediately discontinue all activities linked to the polls across the province. Daily Pakistan reported that preparations will stay frozen until the constitutional and legal obstacles are removed.
The commission has not announced a new polling date or any timeframe for restarting the process. Daily Pakistan reported that any revised schedule will depend on resolving the existing legal complications.
Background
khabr.pk reported on 5 November that the ECP had set 7 February 2027 for the first phase of local government elections in Punjab, and had also suspended the election process in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa until further orders.
Why it matters
Voters and candidates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa face postponed local polls. Elected local government institutions in the affected districts will not be restored for now, because the commission has frozen all preparations. No new date has been given, so candidates and election staff have no timetable to work to.
