What moves the gold price in Pakistan
Gold in Pakistan is sold in rupees, but around the world it is traded in US dollars. When the world price per ounce rises, or the rupee weakens against the dollar, the local rate usually goes up within a day.
Pakistan imports most of its gold, so the Sarafa rate can sit above or below the world price. The gap depends on import costs, the open-market dollar rate and local demand, and it tends to widen in the wedding season and before Eid.
Interest rates, inflation and tension around the world matter too. Gold often rises when investors look for safety, and falls when the dollar strengthens or interest rates go up.
One tola is 11.66 grams. 24 karat gold is 99.9% pure. 22 karat, the most common for jewellery, is about 91.6% pure, 21 karat is 87.5% and 18 karat is 75%.
