Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on a press conference that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) will not be given permission to hold a rally on Shahrah-e-Faisal in Karachi, according to Express News and Daily Pakistan.

Memon said no political party will be allowed to hold a rally on the road. He said parties that want to hold rallies must obtain prior permission from the relevant authorities and hold them peacefully and legally.

He also said MQM will not be allowed to repeat events like May 12. Quoted in Urdu by both outlets, he said the government would not let an atmosphere of clashes and unrest arise under any circumstances.

On provincial autonomy, Memon said the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Sindh government have made their stance clear. He added that the Sindh Assembly's decision on the matter has already been given.

He also spoke about decisions of the Sindh cabinet. It approved reducing the government wheat release price from Rs5,000 to Rs4,500 per 40 kg. Memon said flour prices have begun falling by Rs17 per kg because of the new price.

The cabinet approved registering Lady Dufferin Hospital Trust under the Sindh Trust Act 2020. It also approved additional funds of Rs502.409 million for five development schemes in Jamshoro district, and a scheme of Rs2 billion 99 crore 34 lakh 26 thousand to improve water supply and drainage in Nawabshah Town, Shaheed Benazirabad district.

A cabinet committee has been formed on katchi abadis to draft laws and proposals for a one-window operation to resolve their issues.

On traffic, Memon said a Traffic Management Authority will be set up and a smart traffic management system introduced in Karachi. He said strict measures are being taken to enforce traffic laws.

Why it matters

A ban on rallies on a main Karachi road affects city residents and the political parties operating there. The cabinet's wheat price cut, which Memon linked to falling flour prices, also concerns households in Sindh.
