The Sindh government has officially fixed the support price of wheat at Rs4,500 per maund across the province. The rate is lower than the previous level of Rs5,000 per maund.
Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the decision at a press conference in Karachi on Tuesday. According to Daily Times, the provincial cabinet reduced the rate.
Mr Memon said flour prices will drop by about Rs17 per kilogram once the new support price is implemented. Provincial authorities expect the cut to ease financial pressure on consumers, Daily Times reported.
To enforce the official price, government administrative teams are monitoring grain markets for compliance. Food department inspectors have been authorised to carry out market raids against illegal price gouging, and provincial monitoring committees will provide weekly updates on compliance and enforcement, Daily Times reported.
At the same press conference, the government announced a specialised committee to regularise katchi abadis through a one-window operation. Municipal authorities also plan to introduce a smart traffic management system in Karachi, and traffic police will launch a crackdown on violators of traffic laws.
On public gatherings, political rallies will require prior administrative clearance, and unauthorised gatherings or street demonstrations will not be tolerated within city limits. Daily Pakistan reported that no jalsa will be allowed on Shahrah-e-Faisal and that MQM will not be allowed to hold an event on 12 May.
Daily Times said Mr Memon issued a warning to MQM-P about public rallies on Shahrah-e-Faisal, and law enforcement agencies have been told to enforce the assembly rules and prevent public disruption.
Why it matters
The wheat support price affects flour prices for consumers and the incomes of farmers in Sindh and across Pakistan.
