- Admission is to be strictly on merit for children from the poorest and most deserving families.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate the construction of Daanish Schools across the country and to keep work going round the clock so the schools are completed on time. He also stressed that no compromise on their quality standards would be acceptable, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan and 24 News.
The directions came at a review meeting on the progress of the project. Daily Jang reported that the meeting was held online over Zoom, with the prime minister presiding from Lahore. Federal ministers and senior officials joined through the video link. Daily Jang named the ministers as Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Shaza Fatima and Mesdaq Masood Malik.
The participants were briefed on construction progress in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sindh and Balochistan.
According to 24 News, the prime minister said children are the country's future and that the schools are an investment in a brighter Pakistan. He ordered third-party validation of the quality of infrastructure, facilities and services at the schools.
He also directed that modern teaching and training methods based on artificial intelligence and information technology be introduced. On admissions, he said places would be granted strictly on merit to children from the poorest and most deserving families.
The prime minister told the Ministry of Communications to ensure an improved road network to the Daanish Schools in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He also asked for an early strategy to establish schools in the merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the former FATA.
Daily Jang quoted Shehbaz Sharif as saying that no compromise on the quality of Daanish Schools would be acceptable.
Why it matters
Daanish Schools are a national government school project, so the pace of construction and the merit-based admission of poor children affect students across Pakistan.
