Business Recorder reported that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) revised the ex-depot prices under the federal government's petroleum pricing mechanism. Express News reported that the notification attributed the changes to shifts in global market prices, premiums and other costs, and that the new rates apply from midnight.
The revision follows increases a day earlier. For October 27, petrol was raised by Rs1.54 per litre and diesel by Rs2.16 per litre, The Express Tribune reported.
On July 17 the government announced that fuel prices would be reviewed and notified daily instead of weekly, as renewed tension between the United States and Iran caused volatility in global oil markets, according to The Express Tribune.
The same outlet reported that on September 13 Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a relief scheme of Rs100 per litre off petrol for motorcycles, three-wheeler rickshaws and cars up to 800cc. It is estimated to cover 11.8 million beneficiaries. On September 17 the government reintroduced austerity and fuel conservation measures, including a 9pm closing time for shops and markets, 10pm for marriage halls and 11pm for restaurants, with takeaway and home delivery exempt, according to a Cabinet Division notification.
On global markets, Brent crude futures were down $2.09, or 1.8%, at $113.72 a barrel on Tuesday, and US West Texas Intermediate was down $1.93 at $99.83, as traders watched Middle East peace talks, the Tribune reported.
