Pakistan will host the second edition of the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum, known as PMIF26, on November 12 and 13 at the Jinnah Convention Center in Islamabad. The event is themed "Pakistan: The Next Critical Minerals Destination", according to Minute Mirror.
The forum is organized by the Government of Pakistan and endorsed by the Special Investment Facilitation Council. State-run Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) is the founding partner. It aims to bring together policymakers, mining executives, investors, financial institutions and technical experts.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a pre-event briefing on Friday for ambassadors and diplomats based in Pakistan, to familiarise them with the forum, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
Pakistan is estimated to hold $6 trillion in mineral reserves. The first edition, PMIF25, was held earlier this year and drew 5,000 delegates from more than 50 countries. Organizers said it produced 16 memoranda of understanding and agreements and 18 panel discussions.
PMIF26 has six key themes: critical minerals, flagship projects, policy and fiscal clarity, ESG, local value addition, and infrastructure and logistics. The program has three tracks: a Strategic Conference, a Technical Conference and an International Exhibition.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir are listed as key national speakers. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik is scheduled to give the welcome address on the first day.
International speakers include John L. Thornton of Barrick Mining Corporation, Robert Friedland of Ivanhoe Mines, Patrick Barnes and Wael Jaber of Wood Mackenzie, and Mustafa Aksoy of Calik Group. Representatives of the World Bank Group, Asian Development Bank, Lazard, Milbank and White & Case are also expected to speak.
Confirmed exhibitors include PMDC, PPL, Mari Energies, GHPL, Reko Diq Mining Company, FWO, NRL and Barrick Mining Corporation. In an organizers' statement, OGDCL said it "is already a joint venture partner in the Reko Diq project, and we want to expand our footprint in the minerals and mining sector through our cooperation with global partners." Registration is open on the LUP event platform; delegate passes cost $100 and exhibition visitor passes $20.
Why it matters
The forum is meant to attract foreign investment into Pakistan's mining sector, which the desk says could affect jobs and economic growth.
