A cylinder explosion at a bakery factory in Lahore's Gulberg Industrial Area killed one person and injured eight others, according to rescue officials cited by Daily Jang and Daily Pakistan Urdu.

Rescue officials said the blast occurred on the first floor of the factory, where more than 40 people were present. Express News reported that about 40 or more people were working there at the time.

Daily Pakistan English reported that the factory is Shezan Bakers, on Guru Mangat Road. It said the explosion shook nearby buildings and caused part of the first floor to collapse. The report described the incident as a gas cylinder blast and said it killed one worker.

Rescue staff gave first aid to the injured and moved them to hospital. Express News said five injured people were shifted to a nearby hospital after first aid, while Jang reported that eight were injured and taken to hospital. Reports therefore differ somewhat on how many were hurt.

Express News reported that officials feared more people might be trapped under the debris and that a rescue operation was under way. It said the final situation would be clear only once the operation was completed.

The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that Punjab Minister for Labour and Human Resources Muhammad Manshaullah Butt took strict notice of the incident. The agency described it as a fire at the bakery factory, reportedly caused by gas leakage in the baking area. The minister sought a report from the Director General Labour Punjab.
