- KMC will rehabilitate about 140 more roads under a Rs13 billion plan.
- Work orders are to be issued within two to three days after tendering was completed.
- Work will cover all seven districts of Karachi.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will begin rehabilitating about 140 more roads across the city within the next few days. He announced this at a press conference at the KMC Head Office on Monday.
According to ProPakistani, the work falls under a Rs13 billion development plan. KMC has completed the tendering process and will issue work orders within two to three days. Construction is expected to begin by the end of this week.
The mayor said the road work will cover all seven districts of Karachi without political discrimination. ProPakistani reported that the Rs13 billion will be used to improve road conditions and infrastructure problems in different areas of the city.
The local government set aside between Rs68 billion and Rs70 billion for development projects at the start of the current financial year, ProPakistani reported. Mr Wahab said KMC is taking practical steps rather than citing limited powers and resources.
Daily Times reported that Mr Wahab said development work has resumed across Karachi after a long period, with projects under way in all seven districts. He said Sindh is the only province with an established local government system.
He also listed other projects. A foundation stone was laid for a 65 MGD wastewater treatment facility, expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. Once finished, the Haroonabad and Gutter Baghicha facilities would together treat 100 MGD.
Spencer Eye Hospital, established in 1940, has resumed operations after the City Council approved a public-private partnership. It sees about 350 outpatients daily and provides cataract surgeries and laser treatment free of charge.
The new block at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, a ground-plus-five-storey building of about 200,000 square feet, has been completed after 52 years. Its outpatient services are expected to start within the week. Three garbage transfer stations, at Qayyumabad, Sharafi Goth and Gutter Baghicha, are expected to be operational by the end of the year.
Why it matters
Road conditions affect daily commuting and traffic for millions of Karachi residents, and the work is meant to cover all seven districts.
