A ship carrying 51,000 metric tonnes of imported wheat docked at Karachi Port on Wednesday, according to the Karachi Port Trust (KPT). The vessel, MV Gokova M, arrived at 1225 hours on October 28, 2026.

KPT said the geared vessel was allocated Berths 16 and 17, where handling operations are underway. The cargo is being unloaded at Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML).

A second geared vessel, MV Great Rainbow, is expected to arrive on November 3 with 59,132.19 metric tonnes of wheat. Once it arrives, the two shipments together would total more than 110,000 metric tonnes.

On Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee on Wheat. It reviewed grain availability and import plans to keep supplies steady.

Dar said maintaining adequate wheat stocks and preventing supply disruptions are among the government's top priorities. He stressed effective coordination between federal and provincial authorities so that essential food items are available at affordable prices.

He directed the authorities to monitor market trends closely, ensure adequate wheat supplies across the country and take measures so that flour prices move downward.

Food Security and Research Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa and senior provincial and ministry officials attended. Hussain said, "There would be no shortage of wheat this year." He said strategic reserves of up to six million tonnes would be maintained this year.

According to ProPakistani, Hussain said up to 550,000 metric tonnes could be imported depending on provincial demand, and called the recent rise in wheat prices artificial, saying prices should normalise within days. He said the government set the wheat price at Rs4,500 per maund under a National Wheat Policy, formulated after nearly four decades, and that all provinces were consulted.

Why it matters

Wheat imports and reserves bear on flour supply and prices for households across Pakistan. The government says it is working to keep supplies adequate and flour prices falling.
