- 2,007 technical posts in the National Highways and Motorway Police were abolished
- The move is part of the government's rightsizing policy
- The decision was taken by the Cabinet and the Establishment Division
- Remaining staff can be promoted after completing prescribed service periods
Parliamentary Secretary for Communications Gul Asghar Khan told the National Assembly on Thursday that the government had abolished 2,007 technical posts in the National Highways and Motorway Police under its rightsizing policy.
He was responding to a Calling Attention Notice about the discontinuation of the previous service structure for technical staff of the Motorway Police. According to the reports, that discontinuation suspended promotions and affected the career progression of employees.
Daily Times reported that the abolished posts included plumbers, electricians and other technical staff.
The posts were abolished after federal government instructions to eliminate what were described as dying cadres. The Cabinet issued directions for this, and the Ministry of Communications abolished the posts accordingly. The ministry had earlier promoted employees working in these cadres.
A rightsizing committee formed on the prime minister's instructions recommended eliminating dying cadres and outsourcing services wherever possible, in order to reduce the burden on the federal government.
The parliamentary secretary said the decision was taken by the Cabinet and the Establishment Division, and the ministry could not reverse it on its own. He said the remaining employees could be promoted under the existing policy once they complete the prescribed service periods.
MNA Neelam asked that the matter be referred to the government for further consideration. She said the technical staff had worked in these cadres for a long time and the issue should be discussed at Cabinet level.
The rightsizing policy applies to all federal ministries, not only the Ministry of Communications or the National Highways and Motorway Police.
Why it matters
Technical employees of the National Highways and Motorway Police are directly affected in their jobs and promotions. The rightsizing policy also applies to all federal ministries.
