The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has received a record 7.5 million income tax returns up to October 30, 2026, according to 24 News Business. The figure for October 30, 2025 was 5.7 million, an increase of 1.8 million returns. Daily Pakistan reported that the last date for filing returns is October 31.

Minute Mirror, citing official documents, gave a more detailed count. It said 7,556,387 returns have been submitted this fiscal year, against 5,942,175 in the same period last year, a rise of more than 1.614 million.

Of these, non-salaried taxpayers filed 5,069,378 returns, compared with 3.676 million a year earlier. Salaried individuals filed 2,372,814 returns, and their approved tax liability was recorded at Rs9.5184 billion.

Tax collection from the returns has reached Rs100.605 billion, according to the documents. Minute Mirror said this is Rs11.58 billion lower than the previous year, even though more returns were filed.

Companies filed 15,243 returns this year, down from 18,051 last year. Associations of persons filed 98,952 returns, compared with 91,766 last year.

Separately, the PTBA and LTBA have sought another extension in the deadline for Tax Year 2026, saying taxpayers lack enough time. In a letter to FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial, the PTBA asked for 34 more days. It said the filing notification was issued on September 2, a 64-day delay from July 1, and that two 15-day extensions only partly made up for it.

The LTBA demanded that taxpayers get the full statutory period of 90 days. The PTBA also cited figures showing that 7.3 million returns filed by October 29 generated Rs85 billion in tax, against Rs88.5 billion in the corresponding period last year.

Minute Mirror also reported that 3,295 registrations have been completed under the government's scheme for small retailers. Of these, 2,811 retailers registered through the online portal and 484 through the mobile application.

Why it matters

The figures show how many taxpayers in Pakistan have filed returns before the deadline, and business bodies say many still need more time. Collection from the returns is reported lower than last year despite the rise in filings.
