Apple has launched a new 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 24-inch iMac, both powered by its M6 chip. The company announced them on Tuesday, October 27. According to Gulf News, pre-orders in the UAE open on October 28 and sales and deliveries begin on November 6.
Gulf News reports UAE prices starting at Dh8,499 for the MacBook Pro and Dh6,499 for the iMac. A more powerful iMac configuration with additional processing and graphics capabilities costs from Dh7,499. Buyers can pay more for extra memory and storage on the laptop. Prices for Pakistan were not reported.
Apple says the M6 MacBook Pro delivers up to 30 per cent faster graphics than the M5 model, and up to 11 times faster graphics than the original M1 MacBook Pro in certain tests. Apple says battery life can reach up to 24 hours, though real-world results depend on use. The laptop has a 14-inch Liquid Retina XDR screen and a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, and comes in space black and silver.
The 24-inch iMac keeps its 4.5K Retina display. Apple says it offers up to twice the graphics performance of the previous M4 iMac, and that some everyday tasks, including work in Microsoft Excel, can run up to 2.5 times faster than on an M1 iMac. It comes in seven colours: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver.
Both computers get faster storage, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Ars Technica notes that the N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
Apple is also promoting on-device AI. It says the MacBook Pro handles certain AI workloads up to 25 per cent faster than the M5 version, and the iMac is up to five times faster than the M4 model in specific on-device AI tests. These figures come from Apple's own testing and do not mean every AI app will run that much faster.
Both machines run macOS 27, which includes an upgraded Siri. Siri can help search supported emails, messages and photos, answer questions about what is on screen, and help write or edit text. Safari can sort tabs by topic and alert users to restocks and price drops. Some Siri AI features remain in beta, depending on language, region and software version.
Gulf News says owners of Intel Macs or first-generation M1 models stand to gain most, while those with M4 or M5 Macs who mainly browse, use email and office documents may see less reason to upgrade.
Why it matters
Pakistani professionals and students who buy Apple Macs may want to know the new models' features, though prices for Pakistan were not reported and only UAE prices are available.
