Early screen crack complaints reported for Apple's foldable iPhone Duo

Some owners of Apple's first foldable iPhone say the inner display cracked near the hinge, in some cases within hours. Apple has not publicly identified a cause, and it is unclear how many phones are affected.

Apple's first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, is facing early durability concerns after some owners reported cracks in the inner display near the hinge. In some cases the damage was reported within hours of purchase, according to The Express Tribune.

Photographs shared on Reddit and technology forums show cracks along the central fold of the screen, and some damaged displays developed bright lines of pixels. The reports do not establish how widespread the problem is, and the cause remains unclear. Images from China and other countries have also circulated.

One Australian customer said the display cracked after about six hours of ownership and fewer than 20 openings. According to MacRumors, the owner felt something beneath the screen near the hinge while opening the phone to show a friend, and then heard a crack. The customer reported no visible external damage and said the phone had not been dropped.

Apple first offered an express replacement. The owner instead went to an Apple Store and was given a replacement device on the spot.

Tom's Guide and Digital Trends have reported complaints involving devices in several markets. The Tribune noted that social media posts alone cannot establish a failure rate or show that all cases share one cause.

Tom's Guide also covered a durability test by YouTuber JerryRigEverything, which reportedly found dust entering the hinge area. In a later bend test, a green line appeared on the inner display before it stopped responding. That test involved deliberate stress and does not show the same damage would happen in normal use.

The Verge reported that another YouTuber, CuriousHagi, reproduced a cracked screen during durability testing and then took the phone apart to look for the cause. Its summary said the cracks seem to happen in the same place. Speculation about the cause has included pressure from hinge components, manufacturing tolerances or trapped debris, but none of these has been confirmed.

Apple had not publicly identified a cause in the coverage reviewed. The Tribune said more verified cases, technical inspections and an official response from Apple would be needed to judge whether there is a broader reliability problem. It also noted strong demand and limited store availability at launch, with no evidence linking supply to the screen damage.

Why it matters

Readers in Pakistan considering a premium foldable phone may want to know that early reliability complaints have been reported, though their scale and cause are not yet established.
